  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon chili sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger
  • 1/2 onion, sliced
  • 1 bell pepper, sliced
  • 12 red chilies, sliced (optional for extra heat)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onions for garnish

Instructions

  1. Thinly slice the beef against the grain.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine cornstarch, all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, pepper, egg, and water; whisk until smooth.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a wok over medium-high heat. Dip beef strips in batter and fry in batches until golden brown (about 3-4 minutes). Drain on paper towels.
  4. In the same wok, heat sesame oil and sauté garlic, ginger, onion, and bell pepper for about 2 minutes.
  5. Stir in soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, chili sauce, and sugar; simmer for 2 minutes.
  6. Add crispy beef to the sauce mixture; toss to coat and stir-fry for another 2-3 minutes.
  7. Garnish with green onions and serve immediately over rice or noodles.
